Building resilience at York Child Care Centre

York Child Care Centre has acknowledged and embraced the messaging of the blue tree to develop and foster resilience skills in the children attending the centre.

Painting trees blue is a powerful message of hope by communities in WA’s Wheatbelt to help break down the stigma of mental illness.

During Harmony Week, children made their own blue trees and then used the activity to build a conversation about emotions, feelings and who and what makes them happy.

The children then drew that onto the spray-painted blue CD to reflect leaves and acknowledge that everyone is different.

Centre manager Brenda Treloar said recognising and understanding emotions were essential skills to develop when building resilience in young people.

Challenges and Choices is SDERA's core resilience, drug and road safety education program for students K-10.
