Workshops

School Drug Education and Road Aware offers professional development throughout WA. The focus is on supporting teachers, school staff and community agencies in the areas of resilience, drug and road safety education.

The following workshops are scheduled at various times throughout the year. Registration is necessary. All workshops are fully funded and teacher relief is provided.

SDERA PD workshops can be used to comply with WACOT’s membership requirement to complete a minimum of 3 professional learning activities over 5 years.

Drug Education In Focus

Who: School based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 12 students
What: This one day workshop offers a general introduction and background to school drug education. It provides information around drug research and models for understanding drug use. It clarifies the ‘real picture’ of student drug use and considers best practice in school drug education and how to deliver this within your school.
When: 8.15am—3.30pm

A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of the professional development workshop.

Steps, Spokes and Seatbelts

Who: School based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 10 students
What: This one day workshop offers an introduction to school road safety education. It provides information around road safety issues and research; considers best practice in road safety education; links teachers to other road safety agencies; and includes a practical first aid presentation from St John Ambulance. The workshop offers teachers activities and strategies to implement in a road safety program.
When: 8.15am—3.30pm

A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of the professional development workshop.

Challenges and Choices: Resilience, drug and road safety education for early and middle childhood teachers

Who: School based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 7 students
What: This one day workshop unpacks the Challenges and Choices : Early and Middle Childhood resources for resilience, drug and road safety education. It provides teachers with an understanding of resilience, drug and road safety statistics and research for primary students. Teaching and learning strategies from these resources that have a focus on literacy and collaborative learning will be modelled throughout the workshop.
When: 8.15am—3.30pm

Participants are requested to bring the Challenges and Choices teacher resource for their students’ phase of schooling.

A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of the professional development workshop.

Challenges and Choices: Resilience, drug and road safety education for early adolescence teachers

Who: School based staff working with Year 8-10 students
What: This one day workshop unpacks the Challenges and Choices: Early adolescence resource for resilience, drug and road safety education. It provides teachers with an understanding of resilience, drug and road safety issues for secondary students and a basic overview of drug and road safety statistics and research. Teaching and learning strategies from this resource will be modelled throughout the day.

Alcohol and Cannabis In Focus

Who: Upper Primary and Secondary School Staff
What: This one day workshop provides information on alcohol and cannabis with an opportunity to explore the history, laws and educational opportunities surrounding these drugs. It is aimed at upper primary and secondary educators as well as interested members of the school community. Australian Government resources unpacked at this workshop are Rethinking Drinking and Cannabis and Consequences.

Resilient Kids: Social And Emotional Learning

Who: School-based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 10 students
What: This one day workshop unpacks key social and emotional competencies students require to become resilient. SDERA’s Challenges and Choices: resilience, drug and road safety education resources and Australian Government resources My TV, The Big Move, One and All will be unpacked at this workshop.

Drug Education Forum Workshop

Who: School based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 12 students
What: This one day workshop provides practical information on how to organise and conduct a drug education forum in your school. All WA schools have been allocated funding to take part in conducting a drug education forum by Term 3 2008, either as an individual school initiative or in a cluster of schools combining funding for a joint forum. Education systems and sectors have signed an agreement with the Australian Government in support of the project. The forums actively involve students as participants and are an opportunity to involve parents and the community in school drug education programs, thus creating a partnership approach towards creating safer and healthier environments. The workshop unpacks the Australian Government Leading Education About Drugs (LEAD) and REDI for Parents resources.

Keeping In Touch: Secondary - Working with alcohol and other drug use

Who: Secondary school based staff
What:

Keeping In Touch offers professional development in early intervention to all school-based staff. It serves to increase knowledge and understanding around drug use issues and to introduce practical strategies and support pathways to aid in the management of drug use issues in schools. It considers:

  • the role of the staff member in working with drug use issues within duty of care
  • attitudes and beliefs around drug use
  • how and why drug use may become an issue
  • knowledge and skill development in identifying students in need of support
  • strategies and practices to aid intervention/support provision
  • development of partnerships between schools and specialist agencies to provide sustainable support to staff.

This professional development is offered over two consecutive days with a one-day follow up session. A copy of the Keeping In Touch resource will be provided to all participants as a CD ROM.

When: 8.15am—3.30pm for two day workshops and follow up day

A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of the professional development workshop.

SDERA Professional Learning Seminars

Who: School based staff working with Kindergarten to Year 12 students
What:

These fully funded seminars will be conducted after school hours and in various locations around the metropolitan area. School staff who have attended any SDERA professional development, as well as those who are interested in being involved in SDERA in the future, are welcome to attend. Seminars usually begin with afternoon tea and networking at 4.00pm. A guest speaker presents information on a specific topic which is then followed by dinner.

When: 4.00pm—8.00pm

Past presentations have included Alcohol and its impact on young Western Australians; Cannabis: Latest research; Current trends in illicit drug use in Perth and Pharmaceuticals and a Paraplegic Benefit Fund presentation

A certificate of attendance will be provided on completion of the professional development workshop.

Keys for Life: Pre-driver program

Who: School based staff working with Year 10-12 students
What:

This one day workshop is compulsory for teachers wishing to implement the Keys for Life program.  The program is suitable for Year 10-12 students as well as young people at non-school sites and centres.  It focuses on the development of positive road user attitudes, risk management strategies and encouraging driving practice (under supervision). Participating students receive free resources including a journal, driving guide, pamphlets and a road rules handbook.

On completion of the program (approximately 10 hours), teachers are authorised to conduct the Learner's Permit Theory Test (road rules test) with students at school and issue certificates which can be redeemed for a discounted Learner's Permit at any licensing centre in the state. Keys for Life is a Council endorsed course and students can accrue 1 point toward the WA Certificate of Education (WACE).

Schools intending to implement Keys for Life can only access the resource by attending a one day Keys for Life workshop.  Schools may send more than one staff member to the workshop.

Keys for Life: Parent Workshop

This is a free, school community-based initiative for young people and their parents/carers that promotes the importance of supervised driving practice for learner drivers.

The 1 hour interactive session provides parents/carers and the learner driver with:

  • the importance of getting as much supervised driving practice as possible
  • ways to communicate to take the stress out of driving practice.

Students who help to organise and run a Keys for Life parent workshop can accumulate community service hours towards their compulsory 20 hours of community service.

Schools can contact the RAC in the metropolitan area or RoadWise and SDERA Regional Project Officers to facilitate the session.

Alternatively, school staff can facilitate a Keys for Life: Parent workshop after participating in the Keys for Life professional development workshop conducted by SDERA.

Smart Steps: Road safety education for carers of 0-4 year olds

Evidence that shows that the most effective time to get involved in good road safety practices is early childhood, including the ante-natal period (Elliott, 2001).

Smart Steps is a free parent and carer community based education program that supports parents and carers to model safe behaviours and make safer decisions in the road environment for young children. It addresses three key areas of risk regarding the use of child car restraints and general passenger safety, safe pedestrian practices and safer play.

Professional training
Training is offered to child health and community agency professionals who provide a service to parents, carers and families who have young children.
Participants of the Smart Steps training workshop will receive a free presenter’s kit and a certificate of participation.

Child Car Restraint Fitting Course

RoadWise conduct a Type 1 Child Car Restraint Fitting Course which aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to competently fit child car restraints in vehicles and to become part of a state-wide network of qualified and approved Type 1 Fitters.
